Morality and miracles are not really very compatible. If anyone could just zap up a house and a car on a whim what would be the point of marriage? If anyone could just zap up anything in any amount why is stealing wrong? Just zap up enough for everyone.
This dilemma is addressed in scriptures in the apparition of Jesus with Moses and Elijah to some disciples of Jesus. It is also called the “Transfiguration.” See Matthew 17:1-8, Mark 9:2-8, or Luke 9:28-36. Moses represents the morality outlined on the stone tablets. Elijah represents miracles where Elijah is more co-agent and benefactor of the miracles. The “plagues” were not designed by Moses and did not benefit Moses personally.
The “miracles” in scripture are not very miraculous. Crossing the Red Sea at the point the Hebrews did was not as miraculous as crossing the Mississippi River at St. Louis would be. Scriptures are not clear that Jesus sustained any mortal damage to his brain, lungs, or heart, and there was no word for a coma in those days. It is at least possible then that Jesus merely recovered from a coma. Disappearing into the “sky” could be no more than disappearing into a “cloud” of vapor or dust much closer to the ground. The “water” that was set afire might have been a form of petroleum that merely looks like water similar to kerosine, and so on and on.
It can appear that the people of God did not so much believe in miracles themselves as their enemies at the time did. It can appear that they were merely putting their enemies at bay.
Today the “miracles” of science (unrealistic expectations) can also not be very compatible with morality. There is no medical procedure that can change the gender assigned by the parts at birth. When there is nothing left but renewable energy there will likely be far less energy available for use than with current fossil fuel supplies. Science has a sort of “Elijah.” Science has no Moses though.
